People have shaped landscapes for millennia for food, shelter, and other needs. As land-use change has escalated, however, it has become a key driver of biodiversity loss, climate change, and decline in other ecosystem services. Must land use and conservation always be at odds? Around the world, the livelihoods of billions of people are dependent on ecosystems; how to maintain ecosystem function while providing for sustainable, equitable livelihoods, is the central challenge that our lab studies.

Lab News

Welcome to Dr. Laura Vang Rasmussen, who has just joined the lab as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow to study links between food and forestry.

Welcome to Gabriela Barraga´n, who won a UBC Four Year Doctoral Fellowship and a WWF Russell E. Train Fellowship to support her PhD work in the lab on restoration and climate change in Ecuador.

Welcome to Hyeone Park, a new PhD student who will be working on urban food forestry! She was awarded a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship to support her work.

Welcome to Jennifer Norihiro, who was awarded a summer undergraduate research award to examine factors contributing to restoration success (or failure!) in tropical forest ecosystems.

Congrats to Lauren Nerfa, who won an NSERC Master's fellowship for her work in Malawi on forest degradation and perspectives on restoration.

Congratulations to Theraesa for completing her thesis and landing a great job at the Fisheries and Oceans Canada!

Congrats to Emily for completing her thesis and starting a wonderful new job in the Resilient Landscapes Program at the San Francisco Estuary Institute!!

Congratulations to Delphine who just published a great paper in PNAS on historical dynamics of ecosystem services through time!

Congrats to Theraesa for getting a job at DFO! (Now she just needs to do a final edit of that thesis and submit it already...)

Welcome to Libin who has just moved from Kerala to start his M.Sc. in the lab. We promise it won't get (much) colder.

Congrats to Theraesa for winning the Best Student Presentation Award at the IALE (Landscape Ecology) World Congress!

Sylvie's paper on ecosystem service trade-offs in shifting cultivation systems was just published in Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment - Congrats!
